This season in the Seaver Division it was a dogfight throughout the year. Only the Mets were on the outside looking in as the rest of the teams battled back and forth all season long. The Mets had "The Polar Bear" and he delivered 42 HR's. J.D. Davis chipped in with 31 more. Zack Wheeler pitched excellent baseball and still lost 14 games! You knew the Phillies were going to boom with the big bats of Bryce Harper, Josh Lowe, Adolis Garcia, J.T. Realmuto & Nick Castellanos. Then on the days that Aaron Nola and Zach Eflin were on the mound the Phils were capable of beating anyone. Johan Rojas and Cole Ragans each gave the team a spark in limited roles but in such a tight division the combined effort fell a little short.
The Yankees were somewhat of an anomaly. The pitching was suprisingly strong while hitting was just as surprisingly weak. Yanks hitters did supply the long ball with 245 homers, 45 more than their pitchers allowed. However the teams .232 Batting Average was only above 3 other teams in the league. Aaron Judge underperformed his card hitting 66 points below his MLB batting average, 53 points below his MLB OB% and 158 points below his MLB SLG%. Just any kind of normalcy from Judge and the Yankees probably make up the 3 games that they fell short of the playoffs.
Meanwhile the Blue Jays were towards the other end of the achievement spectrum. A new found power stroke from Randal Grichuk and Cavan Biggio with .903 & .849 OPS percentages infused new energy into the Blue Jays lineup. Bichette, Teoscar Hernandez and Vlad Jr. were steady performers around the middle of the pack offensively. The rotation led by Jose Berrios, Charlie Morton & Jordan Lyles was good enough to keep the Jays in the race all season. Jordan Romano caused some headaches by being a little unlucky with the long ball but still closed 34 games. Only finishing 1 game outside the playoffs there had to be so many instances of "if only" that could have changed the Blue Jays fortunes.
Now we move to the playoff teams. The Orioles got there for the first of what should be several times in the post season. A team with so many young and upcoming stars the teams future seems bright. With a core of Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson, Bobby Witt Jr. and more on the way the Orioles look like they will be consistent playoff visitors for years to come. For this year veterans Anthony Santander and Yandy Diaz paced the offense, Diaz hitting .316 and Santander smacking 38 long balls. The O's starting rotation got a significant boost from Tyler Wells to support Kyle's Bradish and Gibson. All this was enough to punch their playoff ticket.
The Red Sox won their division and they did that with some big offense. When you talk about the Red Sox you have to start with Mookie Betts. The DFDL MVP Betts hit .304 with 47 homers, a league leading 132 RBI's while playing 162 errorless games at 5 different positions. Add a little spice to the offense with Bogaerts, J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers and yes it's an offense that cooks. The starting pitching was solid if not dominant. A rotation of Rodriguez, Bello, Crawford & Eovaldi. Then to protect the lead at the end of the game you have Trevor May and Jeff Hoffman. A well balanced team that is versatile and dangerous, they would end up taking the Seaver Division.
The Boudreau division would end up being a three team race. The White Sox wait for their farm system to grow or for the comebacks of some of their veterans. The Twins got some very nice pitching from Sonny Gray and Bailey Ober. Coupled with some excellent hitting from Mitch Garver, Riley Greene and of course led by batting champ Luis Arraez. The team finished over .500 and battled everyone tough. In fact they won the season series over the Dodgers, Braves and Astros. Without sub-par years from Buxton and Adames this is probably a playoff team this season.
The Brewers were in contention for most of the year before fading in the end. The good, Christian Yelich hitting .302 with 18 HR's and 25 steals. Josh Hader was lights out this year. A WHIP of .98 while striking out over 13 batters per 9 innings and he saved 31 games. The bad, the rest of the team struggled to hit with consistency for either average or power. Pitching, the trademark of the Brewers, was also below their standards. Poor Corbin Burnes was snakebit with the long ball this year. 24 HR's allowed in the MLB Burnes allowed 35 in the DFDL.
The Cubs were in the division race all year. Seiya Suzuki paced the team in batting average and Kyle Schwarber was...Kyle Schwarber. The 3-outcome poster boy ended up with 48 HR's over 100 walks and almost 200 K's! Willson Contreras was strong behind the dish, Nico Hoerner was great at Second Base defensively while hitting .276 with 41 steals.The lefty duo of Blake Snell and Justin Steele were very solid but Yu Darvish really struggled, expecially being unlucky in allowing the long ball.
Before the season began the Reds didn't necessarily appear to be a playoff team. You had two solid starters at the top of the rotation in Castillo and Gausman. There was great defense up the middle with Swanson and McLain. The relief pitching was deep with three experienced closers in Alexis Diaz, Will Smith and Raisel Iglesias. It turned out that the hero of the bullpen was Tyler Holton and a mid-season trade for Brandon Drury solidified the offense. Once the team started clicking they marched straight to the playoffs.
Certainly a nominee for over-achieving strat player card of the year has to be Mauricio Dubon. Somehow in over 450 AB's this guy hit over .300 and played a strong CF for the DFDL Indians (yes they're still the Indians). You certainly would have expected the Tribe to have strong starting pitching. That is their calling card. J.P. Sears was a big disappointment in the starting rotation. Whatever luck the Dubon received it was taken from Sears' card. 4-15 and allowing over 2 HR's per 9 innings is not the kind of performance you want. Closer Emmanuel Classe was nails closing out 43 of 46 save opportunities. Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan had bad offensive seasons but Francisco Lindor elevated his offense. Put all these pieces together and the result was the Indians winning the Boudreau division.
