What a far cry from the Seaver-Boudreau Divisions. In the Garvey and the Biggio the playoff picture was pretty much in focus by the time August rolled around. In the Garvey Division there was just one team over .500. The Angels, Mariners and Padres possessed 3 of the 5 lowest batting averages in the DFDL. The Athletics staff ERA was 3rd from the bottom of the league.
The Padres are led by Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. That's a fine start but there's inconsistent support behind them. Pitching is also not a strong suit for the Padres and that's an ongoing area of concern. The Angels have the best all-around player on the planet in Shohei Ohtani. They also have Mike Trout but there are health question marks around him. There are some promising young players in O'Hoppe, Moniak, Schanuel, Rengifo and Adell. Pitching sans Ohtani is a problem area.
The Giants have been Champs in the DFDL but they're more in the middle ground right now. For this season Logan Webb and Jesus Luzardo were a strong 1-2 punch as starters and Camilo Doval was a dependable closer. The rest of the roster pretty much treaded the aforementioned middle ground offensively and defensively. Things will change next season but the G-Men do have some reinforcemetns on the way and look to resume being a contender.
Mariners are a puzzling team. A potentially strong offense collective seems to under-achieve, at least at the MLB level. A lineup of J-Rod, Crawford, Paredes, Kelenic, Raleigh and Suarez should be enough offense. The potential didn't match the results as the Mariners were last in the DFDL in Batting Average. Pitching with Kirby, Miller, Woo & Gilbert should be strong but they fell to the middle of the pack. Next year that rotation should be even stronger so the playoffs might be in their future.
The lone team with a winning record in the Garvey was the Dodgers. Cory Seager and Cody Bellinger had great cards for this season. Supported by Jorge Soler, Max Muncy, Justin Turner and Joc Pederson the offense presented a challenge to opposing pitchers. Kershaw and Bobby Miller were strong atop the rotation but after that the Dodger starters were iffy. The strength of the Dodgers was a deep bullpen anchored by Evan Philips. Phillips earned a league high 42 saves so once it became a 6th or 7th inning with a Dodger lead the game was usually over.
The Nationals suffered another losing season but it wasn't all darkness as their middle of the batting order has some pop. Trea Turner, Bryan Reynolds & Juan Soto formed a nice nucleus and Spencer Torkelson offered power despite hitting just over .200. The pitching staff was not strong and it might take a few seasons to rectify that area.
The Cardinals began the year convinced that a playoff run lied ahead. Brendan Donovan and Jordan Walker excelled with the bat however the expected production from Goldschmidt, Lars Nootbar, Marcell Ozuna was inconsistent at best. While the offense was kind of up and down the same cannot be said for the pitching. Flatly the pitching was bad. Michael Wacha led the starters with a 4.51 ERA and 9 Wins then things were downhill from that point. While this year was one to forget the Cardinals have some good things to look forward to. Bounce back years from Ryan Helsley and Jack Flaherty plus young Shortstop Masyn Winn coming into his own give the Cardinals hope.
Now we come to the playoff teams, first up is the Marlins. A very well balanced team the Marlins were 6th in the league in batting average and 4th in the DFDL in ERA. The team was paced by the infamous Wander Franco. Franco hit just a shade below .300 with 15 HR's and 30 steals all while sporting a "1" range at Shortstop. The offense had 10 different batters supply 10 HR's or more. The true strength of the team was it's starting pitching. The Marlins could rollout a rotation of Mitch Keller, Pablo Lopez, Sandy Alcantara & Braxton Garrett. When you needed an extra start the Fish could call on Eury Perez or Tarik Skubal. Solid team.
While the Marlins balance was good the Diamondbacks was even better. The DFDL's 4th best batting average and 3rd best ERA this was a team primed for a playoff run. The D-Backs had 7 position players start 130 or more games and star Catcher Elias Diaz with his .317 AVG. and 16 HR's appeared in 117 games. Together the everyday lineup was no easy task for opposing pitching. Diamondbacks starting pitching was a little problematic. Merrill Kelly had an outstanding year with 14 Wins in 27 starts and 2.21 ERA. Zac Gallen also had 14 wins in throwing a team leading 221 innings. After the big two the Snakes had to mix and match to fill the rest of the rotation. In relief who was better than Kevin Ginkel? 72 Games, 65 innings, 35 Saves with a 1.80 ERA and no homer allowed!
The Braves won 107 games and led the DFDL in hitting with a .273 Avg. Freddie Freeman enjoyed a phenomenal year batting .332. Ronald Acuna hit .300 with 30 HR's and 59 RBI's. Michael Harris batted .293 with 20 HR's. Ozzie Albies smacked 35 homers and Austin RIley drove in 110 runs. The pitching was led by DFDL Strikeout leader Spencer Strider who K'd an incredible 304 batters. Chris Martin almost went unnoticed but he was outstanding in the closing role with his 37 Saves. In part-time duty the rotation also received exemplary efforts from Max Fried and Chris Sale. A really great season for the Braves.
The Biggio Champs were the Astros. The team finished third in batting average and led the DFDL in ERA and battled the Braves all year long for Division supremacy. The Astros sported excellent depth in their lineup as only two regulars exceeded 500 AB's. The team received great perfomances from Catcher Yainer Diaz, Luke Raley, Jose Altuve and Jose Siri none of the four reached 400 AB's. The rotation was led by Gerrit Cole who lived up to his Ace credentials. Cole had a 19-1 record with an ERA of 2.06. Framber Valdez was more than capable as a 2nd guy in the rotation, winning 20 games and tossing over 200 innings. The Astros bullpen wasn't as consistent as the starting pitching but aside from that the Astros looked ready for a long run in the playoffs.
